Summer Festival success

summer festival

The ten day long Summer Festival (19 - 28th February) has been another success for Lyttelton township. New events, the LPC Photographic Exhibition and the Swap-O-Rama-Rama were particularly successful and the wine tastings by Jo Burzynska also proved very popular.

The ever-popular Street Party was dampened slightly by the tsunami threat in the morning but in the end a good crowd ventured over to Lyttelton for the day to enjoy the wonderful musical and busking performances in the township. Lyttelton Main School Fair was also a great success as a first time event.

Well done Lyttelton and the Festival committee for putting on such a good event. A big thank you to our event organizer Lucy Allen-King. Lucy came to Project Lyttelton as an intern from the CPIT event management school. Project Lyttelton trained her in the practical skills of event management. She has now been involved with the last three festivals and now moves onto full time work with local company Peak Design.

Project Lyttelton - Our Story PDF

Our Story by Anneleise Hall

How did Project Lyttelton get started? How has it developed? What has made Project Lyttelton a model for others?

Find out here: Our Story explores the history and vision of Project Lyttelton (PL).

The achievements of PL in the past six years have been phenomenal. The organisation has embraced cutting-edge thinking to meet the challenges of a changing world. It is showing the way forward with community sustainability, using innovative methods to capture community imagination and help create a shared vision for the future.

Our Story author Anneleise Hall is a former reporter and sub-editor and was a board member of Project Lyttelton from 2004 to 2009. This story is written from a first-hand perspective and experience of PL and through interviews with key people. Download Our Story PDF (1.5MB)

Timebank shows the way for vibrant Local Learning

Project Lyttelton is ‘doing’ ongoing education differently this year. We are starting out this March – see the advertisement for courses and dates for March, April, May – using the Time Bank as a way to provide what we want to learn in this community.

You could be thinking what skill or knowledge that you might like to share with others. Also you may want to ask for what you would like to learn.

In this system, tutors will be paid with time credits.

Students will pay time credits (Surplus time credits will go into the Community Chest.)

The success of this way of providing our ongoing educational needs will depend on the self-organising nature of this community.

At this stage it means all partaking of this learning system need to be Time Bank members. You can join here (link).

To make this way of providing ongoing education work we need for people to give feedback:

Ø What skills/knowledge are you willing to share with others? This can be for an hour, several weeks or a term.

Ø Are you willing to accept Time Bank credits for this work?

Ø What skills/knowledge would you like to gain?

Initially these classes will be held on Wednesday evenings at the Portal (54a Oxford Street, behind the swimming pool) between 7.00pm and 9.00pm.

Keep looking on the website for updates – some courses you need to book for (numbers may be limited or materials may need to be ordered etc), otherwise you can simply turn up.

Each evening in addition to paying time credits for what you are learning, there will be a $5 cover charge towards power, administration etc.

We plan to continue with the successful lecture series later this year under sponsorship.

Like all Project Lyttelton projects there is a team of people supporting and organising this project. If you have an interest in ongoing education you may like to be part of that team.
