Waste is an issue
Each year 228,000 tonnes of material
goes to landfill - 650 kg's per
person. We can minimise that by
reducing the packaging
we buy or use, reusing
things where possible (the Super
Shed is a great example of this)
and recycling items which
cannot be reused. Organic waste
can be composted and Christchurch
City Council can assist this .
It sells kitchen composting bins
from the Lyttelton offices.
Stallholders
Stallholders need to understand
what waste they may generate and
reduce the amount of waste
in the first instance by minimising
packaging etc.
They should try to use suppliers
who will provide returnable or
recyclable products and packaging.
In some cases, it may be possible
to use containers which are biodegradable
and can be composted (eg. plates
made from potatoes).
