Important Community Briefing Info

There will be a further community briefing from Civil Defence on Thursday 24th March, 6.00pm to 7.30pm, on the grassy area above Lyttelton Main school. It is my understanding that this will include a geotechnical update on potential rockfall and land movement issues, and the opportunity to ask questions.

 

In addition, if you are a connector or leader in your local community, might you be keen to help pass on information to your communities from the briefings, particularly those who can't attend? If so, we are keen to meet with you to discuss how we can support you in this. If you're interested in this please show up at the venue 30 minutes prior to the briefing start time and identify yourself to the event manager (who will be in a high vis vest). Thanks again.

 

 

 

INVITATION to Community Earthquake Briefings - Round 2 A second round of community briefings has now been scheduled for the week beginning 21 March. The briefings will provide an earthquake recovery update, local information and an opportunity to ask questions on an informal one-to-one basis.

You are invited to attend any one of the community briefings scheduled.

It is best to attend your nearest briefing if you can because there will be some local content as well as general relevant information.

Update on demolition contractors accreditation from Civil Defence, forwarded FYI:

 

A demolition accreditation process began on the weekend. Eight firms have received demolition accreditation so far.

 

They are:

•             Nikau Contractors Ltd

•             Ward Demolition

•             Stevensons Earthworks

•             Blakely Construction

•             Taggart Earthmoving Ltd

•             Dormer Construction Ltd

•             Frews Contracting Ltd

•             Southern Demolition and Salvage Ltd

 

Civil Defence has received around 50 applications and these are being worked through. Accreditation will allow Civil Defence to operate a robust management process for all demolitions in Christchurch. It will ensure Civil Defence has control over demolitions, allowing us to direct the limited demolition resources where they are most needed, and ensure debris, including hazardous materials, is appropriately disposed of. Demolition contractors wishing to undertake demolition work of commercial buildings across Christchurch, and any building within the Red Zone, requires accreditation. Demolition contractors undertaking commercial or Red Zone demolitions are not allowed to salvage materials. Where possible, goods of value, such as business equipment, will be returned to the owner or tenant. Building materials will be recycled as much as possible. Demolitions of residential buildings outside of the CBD should be processed through their insurance company. Owners without insurance should contact (03) 941 8999 or 0800 800 169. For such buildings the salvage rights can be agreed upon between the demolition company and building owner. All demolition work requires approval from the National Controller

 

CCC Lyttelton Service Centre

 

CCC Lyttelton Service Centre will be operating from the Lyttelton Recreation Centre on Winchester Street from tomorrow. The service centre building on London Street is currently displaying a red placard. It is great to have Patricia and Debbie back in Lyttelton to answer and CCC-related queries and job requests.

 

BNZ Lyttelton

 

BNZ will be opening their caravan tomorrow on the upper part of London Street close to St John Ambulance. They will be able to offer most usual banking services, such as taking deposits, giving change (please pre-order large change orders), providing account information, and cashing cheques (BNZ cheques only). There will be no foreign exchange available.

South Korea learns from Lyttelton

When time bank organisers in South Korea heard of a conference being organised to talk about empowering communities in the wake of disaster they suggested Margaret Jefferies be invited to speak on the experiences with disaster in Lyttelton/Christchurch.

The host of the forum was looking for a case where victims actively participated as agents of social reconstruction and healing.
Margaret travelled with Project Lyttelton board member Anne Mackay in November to attend the conference and visit time banks in South Korea.

The conference was hosted by the 4.16 Foundation, and it addressed “Contemplating Victims Rights in a Risk Society”

“The 4.16 Foundation has formed around the Seawol,” Margaret said.

“They wanted to look at “How can we prevent disasters, how can we manage them better?’,” she said.

Many in the audience were families of the children killed in the 2014 Sewol tragedy and were new to the concept and practice of time banking.
The first day was visits to the memorial sites, the second day was the presentations and the third day was questions and answers.
The overloaded South Korean ferry MV Seawol capsized on April 16, 2014 with 476 passengers on board. Three hundred and four people died including 250 children who were out on a school trip.
Many families of victims still feel angry at the inadequate response and lack of accountability on all levels.
Margaret presented a talk, ‘Recent disasters in New Zealand and how we are coping in a humane way’, on the role the Time Bank played in the aftermath of the earthquakes. She also spoke on her work with the Christchurch Muslim community about moving forward together in an empowered way after the March 15 terrorist attack. Read Margaret’s talk here
Margaret said the the people were beautiful and the memorials were very moving.
“There were people from other disasters there too. It sounds heavy but it wasn’t really. It was about seeing patterns and overcoming them,” Margaret said.
Margaret welcomed the interest shown in time banking at the conference.
“It was really good having Anne there too with her legal background, particularly with questions around some of the legal aspects of the disasters,” Margaret said.
The rest of the trip was meeting with people from time banks in Seoul and Gumi.
The time banks in South Korea have been set up to work with specific communities.
In Seoul the church based time bank focuses a lot of its efforts around people with special needs, the church community has also pooled money to buy a house for youth accommodation.
“It’s very practical, big stuff really,” Margaret said.
The time bank in Gumi is associated with a senior club. It’s very active with around 1800 members.
“A scheme in South Korea sees seniors paid for up to 15 hours a month if they want to continue work, and if they do more they can do it through the time bank,” Margaret said.
“It’s really interesting seeing different time banks using the same tools different ways.”
