7 Oaks Organic Garden
The 7 Oaks Organic Garden initiative was established in 2007. Project Lyttelton and Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology have developed a memorandum of understanding.
It is sited on the original CPIT Organic Horticultural Training Campus in Opawa, Christchurch. We shareed the grounds with the 7 Oaks Education Centre .
A team of volunteers and paid gardeners have worked hard to bring the organic gardens back to top condition. We have harvested a wonderful variety of vegetables and fruit and are increasing productivity and educational opportunites over subsequent seasons.
There have been many educational opportunties including; supporting the new school as well as running evening classes on growing produce, composting and related matters as well as develop courses on; fruit tree care, herb growing and Harakeke Weaving.
True to the philosophy of Grow Local we are also advised by the community as well we are encouraging other community organisations and organic growers to take up the challenge to start growing food in their own neighbourhood.
In the centre of the Garden is a Wahi Tapu that remind us of the importance of this garden and to celebrate the work of the people who established it. Next to the Wahi Tapu is a strawbale adobe hut which houses the Southern Seed Exchange Seed Bank.
In October of 2010 Project Lyttelton passed management for the project over to Te Puna Oranga 7 Oaks Organics if you would like to participate in one of our working bees they are held at 9.30am -Midday on the last Sunday of the Month, contact Paul Gourlie ( 021 2608059) - All areWelcome.
